Trauma in the Classroom

 

African American students are disproportionately impacted by the disciplinary arm of the school system. Although many factors play a role in this problem, one issue has been the inability or refusal of school and mental health professionals to recognize problematic behaviors as a possible trauma response rather than signs of conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
